His teachers, coaches, childhood friends and Barça teammates, together with journalists, writers and prominent figures from the history of football, come together in a restaurant to analyse and unpick Messi’s personality both on and off the field, and to look back at some of the most significant moments in his life. Viewed from Alex de la Iglesia’s unique perspective, MESSI recreates the player’s childhood and teenage years, from his very first steps, with a football always at his feet, through to the decision to leave Rosario for Barcelona, separation from his family, and the part played in his career by individuals such as Ronaldinho, Rijkaard, Rexach and Guardiola. The film helps us to understand things such as his goal celebrations prompted by his special relationship with his grandmother and the determination and strength of will that took a little boy from Rosario to the top echelons of world football. Shot in Buenos Aires, Rosario and Barcelona, MESSI brings us closer to this FC Barcelona genius, through the views of great footballing legends such as Menotti, Maradona, Valdano and Cruyff, and the people who have been with him throughout his career, archive pictures, and previously unseen interviews and home videos, and by recreating key moments in his life. It’s the meteoric rise of a boy who never stopped running after the ball or pursuing his dream.
